Agrobacteria-Rhizobia Complex

About

  • Agrobacteria-rhizobia complex (ARC) is a diverse group of plant-associated bacteria in the family Rhizobiaceae. This website is created to provide curated information about these bacteria.
    • Agrobacteria
      • Bacteria that cause (or potentially may cause) crown gall or hairy root disease
      • Have (or can have) tumor-inducing plasmids (pTi)
      • A polyphyletic and heterogeneous group that include many species belonging to several different genera (e.g., Agrobacterium, Allorhizobium, Rhizobium)
    • Rhizobia
      • Bacteria that induce nodule formation on a legume host and perform nitrogen fixation

Taxonomy

  • Biovars
    • BV1: the Agrobacterium tumefaciens species complex, divided into multiple genomnospecies (G?), some have Latin names:
Genomnospecies Species Name Representative Strains Note
G1 Agrobacterium fabacearum CNPSo 675T (=UMR 1457T=LMG 31642T), Ach5, 1D1108 LPSN
  • G2: Agrobacterium pusense (Rhizobium pusense in NCBI); CFBP 5875.
  • G3: Agrobacterium tomkonis
  • G4: Agrobacterium radiobacter; 1D1460
  • G7: Agrobacterium deltaense; 1D1609
  • G8: Agrobacterium fabrum; C58
  • G9: Agrobacterium salinitolerans
  • G14: Agrobacterium nepotum
  • G15: Agrobacterium viscosum
  • G20: Agrobacterium shirazense; https://doi.org/10.1094/PHYTO-11-21-0463-SC
  • Agrobacterium arsenijevicii; no genomnospecies assignment, sister of Agrobacterium nepotum; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.syapm.2015.06.001
  • Agrobacterium leguminum; no genomnospecies assignment, sister of Agrobacterium deltaense; https://doi.org/10.1099/ijsem.0.005120
  • BV1-like: sister group of BV1
  • Agrobacterium bohemicum
  • Agrobacterium larrymoorei
  • Agrobacterium rosae
  • Agrobacterium rubi
  • Agrobacterium skierniewicense
  • Agrobacterium vaccinii
  • BV2: current name = Rhizobium rhizogenes
  • BV3: previously Agrobacterium vitis, now Allorhizobium spp. Narrow host range, limited to grapevine.
  • Genus names
  • Agrobacterium: 1 circular chromosome (~2.9 Mb) + 1 linear chromid (~2.2 Mb); BV1 & BV1-like. The linear chromid is a specific trait.
  • Allorhizobium: 1 circular chromosome (~3.7 Mb) + 1 circular chromid (~1.3 Mb); BV3
  • Rhizobium: 1 circular chromosome (~3.8-4.8 Mb) + 1 or more circular chromids; BV2, BV2-like, diverse rhizobia
